Milton Keynes ladies charity table tennis tournament: 14 players, £650 and more than 100 recycled bras

On September 6, a women-only charity table tennis event took place at the Milton Keynes Table Tennis Centre. It had no world ranking points, no star names and no television coverage, yet it raised £650 for Breast Cancer Now and collected more than 100 used bras for the Against Breast Cancer recycling scheme. The tournament was organised by Julie Snowdon, who works for Table Tennis England and serves as secretary of the centre. Fourteen women entered, most of them already part of the centre's monthly ladies-only sessions. The format featured two group rounds, a main final and a consolation final, with the emphasis placed on fun and fair play rather than ruthless competition. From a data perspective, the event is unusual because there is almost no technical or statistical information to analyse. No rankings, no head-to-head records, no serve percentages. But that absence is itself a signal. Grassroots sport does not always need elite templates. The tournament succeeded by building on an existing community, by giving every player more chances to play, and by connecting table tennis to a clear charitable purpose. The bra collection also helped spread awareness beyond the playing hall. The next ladies session will be held on November 1 from 10am to 12pm. Many Vietnamese table tennis centres already have regular female players. If those centres create a welcoming tournament structure with a charitable purpose, they could generate the same kind of long-term commitment that Milton Keynes is building.
